About Oakland Youth Chorus

OYC is proud to be the longest running youth chorus in the East Bay, having served over 600 singers annually since it was founded in 1974. Our mission is to create and sustain programs of high educational and artistic merit, while celebrating and supporting the unique cultures and strengths of each child and youth we serve. Our music education and performance programs provide joy, fulfillment, and a sense of community through musical excellence, while also nurturing the development of the whole child. Through these performances, we offer the opportunity to make connections across the East Bay, foster greater community engagement, and use the arts as service learning experiences.

Choir: Elementary Grades 2-5
Classes focus on developing ear training, solfege and rhythmic skills including beginning dictation, reading scores, and making aesthetic decisions including tempi and dynamics. Singers continue to build age appropriate vocal technique with an attention to personal expression, teamwork, and vocal health.

Choir: Concert Chorus Grades 6-12
Concert Chorus and Chamber Singers deepen sight reading, mastering more complex harmonies, and conducting each other in rehearsal and performance. Solo work, student leadership and independent musicianship is stressed alongside a vibrant performing schedule that serves our community.

Choir: Chamber Singers Grades 6-12
Chamber Singers tour statewide and across the country, connecting with singers and university clinicians in cultural exchange. Touring provides opportunities to connect with other cultures, learn about different regions of the US, and represent Oakland as student leaders. Because we believe in investing in the educational futures of our youth, our tours contain an educational component and college visits. For many of our singers, traveling outside the Bay Area and the opportunity to visit different colleges are experiences they would not have access to without participation in OYC programs.
